When we do patchwork sewing, we use a technique we call chain sewing. The chain sewing technique makes quick work of piecing together squares or rectangles. I've made a short video to demonstrate our version of the chain sewing technique. I've used a serger in the video, but you can use a sewing machine with an overcast stitch, most machines have them (see your manual) or a straight stitch then a zigzag stitch to secure the raw edges.
